Presenting & Public Speaking Course

When will the course run?

The course will run from 10.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. every Saturday morning beginning on September 29th 2018 and finishing on the 17th November 2018.

How much is it?

Course costs €595 for the 8 week course.

Course Support

Lecture materials will be provided by email. Video uploads of the final presentations with commentary and evaluations will be provided to the participants on a closed password-protected website. All attendees will receive a Certificate of Participation. In each two-hour session, participants will get the chance to practice and improve their presentation skills in a safe and encouraging environment.

Week 1

First Session: Introduction

Meet the course tutors and learn about their backgrounds and experience.  Hear from the participants their reasons for attending and discover more detail about the course content.

Second Session: Build a winning structure for your presentation

Anthony will share with you the techniques necessary to structure your speech to get you from a blank sheet of paper to a fully blown speech or presentation. He will cover the importance of an effective opening and powerful closing and how to build a structure to develop the heart of your speech.

Week 2

First Session: How to manage nerves and tackle stage fright

Even the most seasoned speakers are nervous before a big speech.  Justin will teach you some tried and tested tips and techniques to manage your nerves so you can concentrate on delivering your speech.

Second Session: Clear and Effective Delivery

One of the keys to making your presentations more memorable is how you deliver your message! You will learn from Sean some techniques to improve your performance, some exercises to help improve your vocal projection and Sean will encourage you to vary your voice, including pausing, to emphasise effectively key messages in your speech.

Week 3

Each week (from week 3 to week 7) some of the course participants will give a 4 minute speech or presentation to the class.  This will be followed by 2 minutes of feedback from the course presenters.  All of the course participants will have spoken by the end of week 7.

First Session: How to add humour to your presentations

Sean will advise you when and how to add appropriate and well-judged humour as a powerful tool to sell your message and deliver your presentation in a more memorable style.

Second Session: Top tips for giving a speech or presentation 

Anthony will walk you through everything you need to do to make your speech or presentation successful, with a checklist for preparing in advance, how to deal with unexpected issues that arise and post-speech and presentation contact.

Week 4

First Session: Designing persuasive PowerPoint presentations

Giving an effective PowerPoint presentation requires preparation and skill.  Learn how to deliver a knockout business presentation from Justin using PowerPoint.

Second Session: Creating and delivering memorable sales presentations 

Course participants will learn from Anthony how to make memorable sales presentations and how to tailor your approach during a sales process, leaving business pitches with the winning result.

Week 5

First Session: Message development for your speech

Sean will explain the process of developing key messages for your speech or presentation and will suggest how best you can structure those ideas to help the audience remember what you said.

Second Session: Connecting with the Audience

Whether you are presenting to a small group of 20 or a large group of 200, Justin will walk you through the many tactics you can to do in advance to ensure that your presentation achieves the desired response.

Week 6

First Session: Thinking on Your Feet

Anthony will focus on impromptu speaking and explain how to be spot-on with your performance when given a short time or no time at all to prepare.

Second Session: Different Styles for different presentations

You may be delivering an elevator pitch at a networking event, pitching your services during a sales call, or speaking at a small business conference. Sean will steer you safely through these very different types of presentations which are all important for small business owners.

Week 7

First Session: Using Developing Technologies in your presentations

Learn from Justin about the suitability of Prezie, Powtoon, Haiku Deck and more and discover what you need to remember if you are presenting a webinar on Skype or via video conferencing.

Second Session: Running effective meetings and building group consensus 

Sean will teach you how to plan, participate in and run effective meetings that use time wisely and achieve their objectives. Discover how to build consensus even where there appears to be significant disagreement.

Week 8

First and Second Sessions: Presentation Practice

During week 8, all course participants will speak for 4 minutes, using the techniques they have learned during the course and the feedback from the course tutors on their earlier presentations.  These speeches will be filmed and uploaded to a password-protected website where the participants alone can view their endeavours at their leisure and listen to evaluations of their performance from their course tutors.
